A daylong class on thermal imaging for fire ground operations was held during the 102nd New York State Association of Fire Chiefs Annual Convention and Expo. The session, which was held in both classroom and mock field settings, was used to instruct firefighters across New York State on how to properly utilize the newest thermal imaging technology. Thermal imaging cameras are one of the most exciting new technologies to emerge for the fire service in decades. Infrared technology offers a new vision of the fire scene, allowing firefighters to see through smoke to locate the seat of the fire and to quickly locate hazardous hotspots. Thermal imaging cameras used in fire services detect long wave infrared band. All objects emit infrared energy. The camera helps a firefighter distinguish between cool and hot objects. It is a high-tech field device which assists firefighters to detect life, saving lives.
