In an effort to combat the city’s increasing budget crisis, Mayor Michael Bloomberg plans to enact an “accident tax.” WABC breaks down the costs. “0 for a crash or car fire when someone is hurt, 5 for a car fire without injuries, 5 for a crash without injuries. A spokesperson says quote, ‘Right now if you’re at fault at an accident or a vehicle fire, you get a free ride. And that should not be borne by the taxpayers.’” The fees will cover the cost of responding to emergencies, everything from driving the fire trucks to paying benefits for firefighters. An anchor for New York Fox affiliate WNWY was shocked by the new tax. Reporter 1 “This is making me crazy today.” Reporter 2: “Alright, calm down, it hasn’t happened yet, but set it up.” Reporter 1: “Okay, the FDNY is getting ready to charge you if you’re in an accident and they come to help you.” Reporter 2: “Alright, so you’re in a car crash…” Reporter 1: “What’s next? When you come to your house for a fire you get a bill too?” According to CBS affiliate WFAN, the bill will charge all drivers in the accident regardless of fault.
