March 2009 Gordonville, Pennsylvania, Mud Sale. Best to wear your barn boots because they don’t call it a Mud Sale for nothin’. If you can’t get it there, you don’t need it – Acres and acres of Horse drawn buggies and wagons, farm equipment, horses and mules, tools of every description, antiques, quilts, and more, all auctioned off on one Saturday to benefit the Gordonville Fire Department. The whole county pitches in, with school buses picking up visitors and volunteers alike from local hotels and pickup points. Fresh local Amish food is served concession style. Accommodations in the area are generally very clean, and very reasonable. Bring a truck or trailer, you won’t go home empty-handed. When we arrived at the scene at this time the left part of the building was still smoking *** A 5-Alarm Fire broke out 4:30am Sunday November 22, 2009. The fire was started accidentally in the 3 story apartment building. It was started under the roof in an area known as the cockloft, located on the second floor by an unattended an open-flame candle in apartment B21 that caught a curtain or blanket on fire at the Austin Manor apartments at 7024 Rising Sun Avenue between Tyson and Princeton Avenues in the city’s Lawncrest section. Responders were at the apartment complex with in 4 minutes but the building was already fully engulfed. Most residents were out on the sidewalk while others were rescued by firefighters or forced to jump from the windows to safety. More than 100 people were evacuated and was said that 19 people had to be rushed to the hospital with various injuries. Four were in stable condition, & Three were in serious condition with severe burns. Injuries range from burns to smoke inhalation, to trauma from jumping from upper floor windows. This is not the first time this apartment complex has caught fire with the same exact cause of a candle in October of 2001 though it was the other building. burned out of control for more than 90 minutes The building is a total loss.
