The fireys stow the hoses away, having successfully extinguished the blaze in the blackened building behind them. I was awoken that morning by sirens and fire alarms from all directions, and the air was thick with smoke. Karangahape Road was closed from Howe Street to Pitt, and I could see smoke billowing from the top floor of number 373. Auckland Central Fire Station is just around the corner from the scene, but by the time they had arrived, several rooms were fully involved. There were inhabitants trapped on the fire escape, and the firefighters transmitted a fourth alarm for backup. The fire was was put out quickly, and the victims were rescued with no serious injuries. As is usually the case, the fun and games were all over by the time I arrived, but I did get a few decent photos, and these less spectacular videos… Auckland Relief 401: (Relieving Auckland 207) 1989 Scania G93M Pump / Rescue Tender Auckland 205: 1981 Mack CF612 Aerial Platform 1 February, 2007 373 Karangahape Road Auckland, New Zealand References: www.nzherald.co.nz www.flickr.com www.flickr.com www.111emergency.co.nz www.111emergency.co.nz Disclaimer: This YouTube channel is in no way associated with any of the organisations portrayed.

The City of LA is busy building Fire Station #82 on Hollywood Boulevard at Van Ness. The Department of Public Works is in charge of the construction and Street Lighting, Street Services, Transportation, Building & Safety, Water & Power and a host of contractors and subcontractors are all working together to make it happen. Until something goes wrong! Simple signal improvements involved excavation by a subcontractor at the corners of Hollywood & Van Ness, a conduit was discovered or damaged or something (depends on what department is consulted) and the 8′ deep hole was covered with plywood and abandoned. Literally! What a difference a day makes! (actually several days, several calls, a couple of face-to-face meetings…) Two weeks have gone by and the battleground is still there! BUT the DWP returned to the scene of the crime and cleaned it up, removing the dirt and cement and tidying up, leaving a neatly covered excavation hole. Next up, the DPW and the DWP engage their lawyers and determine who is responsible for repairing the sidewalk. Then the subcontractors who have been standing by are compensated and the people of Los Angeles end up paying too much for too little, regardless of who ends up responsible for the sidewalk.

Please read the full description before watching the video. Thank you. Seven years after 9/11, this powerful documentary brings a fresh angle on the terrorist attack. It reveals the extraordinary stories of the people trapped in the 22-storey Marriott World Trade Center Hotel, which nestled beneath the twin towers. Up until now, these stories of luck, sadness, bravery and heroism have rarely been reported; this impressive programme more than compensates. The Marriot was one of New York’s busiest hotels. At 8.45am on 11 September 2001, the hotel was at full capacity, with more than 1000 people staying in its 825 rooms. While guests were finishing their breakfasts, working out in the gym or relaxing in the luxury pool, the hotel’s tranquil environment was shattered by the roar of jet engines and the horror of falling and burning debris. Initially it wasn’t clear to hotel guests exactly what had happened. Some, unable to see the full extent of the carnage way above the hotel, assumed it was minor incident and that the emergency services would soon have things under control. In fact one American lawyer was so busy, preparing for an impending trial, that he stayed in his room. By the time the second plane hit the South Tower at 9.03am, many hotel guests had managed to escape, but as the fires continued to burn out of control and the towers came crashing down, some guests and staff became trapped. Miraculously, 14 survived. This documentary meets some of the survivors. They …
