www.firesprinklerinitiative.org A side-by-side room display set up at the Plymouth Massachusetts Fire Department. Sprinklers had been installed in only one of the rooms. Both rooms were set on fire. Home fire sprinklers are designed to activate when a certain degree of heat increase is reached, so as the temperature in the display went up, the sprinklers went off. As seen in this demonstration, the fire in the sprinklered room was controlled quickly by overhead sprinklers. In contrast, the fire in the room without sprinklers burned out of control until the fire department put out the fire.

arlingtoncardinal.com Notice the Fire Engine Air Horn blasts at just after 0:49 … the signal for all firefighters to evacuate the building. NOW! It’s a little hard to hear because I am closer to a second fire engine running that was not sounding its air horn. At about 5:15 and later Fireground command is communicating with an interior attack crew (can’t see them in the video). An exterior line attack crew comes to the back and they are told not hit the fire in the ceiling because there is a crew inside. If the hose is turned on that ceiling fire while the crew is inside those firefighters can be burned by the water that turns to steam as it hits the fire. They can also be hit by falling burning debris from the force of the water pressure. As soon as the interior attack crew exits, the firefighter in the backyard hits the ceiling fire and knocks it down.

At least 9 people have been killed and 2 badly injured in a fire at a retirement home in the Tver Region, in western Russia. The Emergencies Ministry says there is evidence suggesting one of the residents committed suicide by setting himself alight, and then the flames spread throughout the building. “Several possibilities as to what caused the fire are now being considered. One of them is that the fire was started by one of the residents, a war veteran who may have set himself on fire. An empty petroleum canister was found in his room,” said Darya Korovina from Russian Emergencies Ministry.

SAANICH – Workers renovating a Saanich home got a scare this afternoon when they walked outside to see a brush fire raging toward the house. With a breeze of the water whipping up the flames the fire came within a metre of the house It’s the latest of more than 60 fires on Southern Vancouver Island in recent weeks that fire officials say have all been made by people. Fire officials say the half acre burn is another reminder people need to be more careful in the tinder dry conditions. Though the number of fires is going down, the Saanich Fire Department says they are seeing an increase in the number of potentially serious fires. Saanich Fire says lit cigarettes are still being thrown from cars into the brush along the side of roads. Captain Jerry Tomljenovic is the department’s Fire Planning Officer. He says other items that can cause fires are hot lawnmowers, chainsaws, and tree trimming equipment being placed on long dry grass after they’ve been used. Barbecues are another concern for firefighters, especially when they are located too close to sheds or homes.

This is what is left of my neighbors house. Terribly sad. I just hope that they got all of their animals out.
