The Full Body Hasty Harness has applications in both training and rescue environments. In Training, it can be used with a Belay Line to establish Fall Arrest Protection to safeguard students practicing emergency bailout techniques. In a Rescue situation, the Harness can be used in conjunction with an Escape System to extract a civilian or firefighter out a window or off a roof. There are many variations to tying a Hasty Harness so it’s important to evaluate each one to see what works best for the user and the condition at hand. As many options as there are for deployment, it’s important to note that webbing is not a cure all or the perfect solution for every situation. The user must know when and when not to use it based on the circumstances. Like any other technique or piece of equipment – Firefighters should always gravitate to the easiest method. FDNY Ladder 1, Engine 7, and Battalion 1, located at the corner of Duane Street and Broadway in downtown Manhattan, are called out for a full house response to an automatic alarm at the Javits building, which is located directly across Broadway from their house. As we go across Broadway to the scene, we are joined by Ladder 6 (tiller ladder from Chinatown Dragon Fighters) and Engine 6. The call was immediately dropped due to the fact that the alarm was only being tested, and communication between the people running the test and the fire department was not made. Anyway, Ladder 1, Engine 7, and Battalion 1 return to quarters at the end of the video. Ladder 1 and Engine 7 are both made by Seagrave. Ladder 1 has a 75 foot Aerialscope. This is the complete video showing how an 8-9 foot webbing loop can be used to rescue a Firefighter who has fallen through a hole in a floor or roof. For this technique to work, the integrity of the surrounding area must be strong enough to support the weight of the rescue attempt. Beyond the obvious, the trapped Firefighter must be as familiar with this tactic as the Rescue Team – Including the options and requirements for a rapid and successful deployment.
