The City of LA is busy building Fire Station #82 on Hollywood Boulevard at Van Ness. The Department of Public Works is in charge of the construction and Street Lighting, Street Services, Transportation, Building & Safety, Water & Power and a host of contractors and subcontractors are all working together to make it happen. Until something goes wrong! Simple signal improvements involved excavation by a subcontractor at the corners of Hollywood & Van Ness, a conduit was discovered or damaged or something (depends on what department is consulted) and the 8′ deep hole was covered with plywood and abandoned. Literally! What a difference a day makes! (actually several days, several calls, a couple of face-to-face meetings…) Two weeks have gone by and the battleground is still there! BUT the DWP returned to the scene of the crime and cleaned it up, removing the dirt and cement and tidying up, leaving a neatly covered excavation hole. Next up, the DPW and the DWP engage their lawyers and determine who is responsible for repairing the sidewalk. Then the subcontractors who have been standing by are compensated and the people of Los Angeles end up paying too much for too little, regardless of who ends up responsible for the sidewalk.

Small arms ammunition is cooking off from a first floor bedroom fire. The door to the bedroom was baracaded shut with furniture. Filming started after the evacuation order went out. While using forceable entry to gain access to the bedroom, the live rounds started going off repeatedly. The order was then given for a defensive attack. After the rounds quieted down, we went back in and put it out.

Transcript by (www.newsy.com) You’re watching multisource US news analysis from Newsy Getting in an accident is painful enough as it is, but a new tax on New York City drivers could bring a new kind of pain to taxpayers’ wallets. In an effort to combat the city’s increasing budget crisis, Mayor Michael Bloomberg plans to enact an “accident tax.” WABC breaks down the costs. “0 for a crash or car fire when someone is hurt, 5 for a car fire without injuries, 5 for a crash without injuries. A spokesperson says quote, ‘Right now if you’re at fault at an accident or a vehicle fire, you get a free ride. And that should not be borne by the taxpayers.’” The fees will cover the cost of responding to emergencies, everything from driving the fire trucks to paying benefits for firefighters. An anchor for New York Fox affiliate WNWY was shocked by the new tax. Reporter 1 “This is making me crazy today.” Reporter 2: “Alright, calm down, it hasn’t happened yet, but set it up.” Reporter 1: “Okay, the FDNY is getting ready to charge you if you’re in an accident and they come to help you.” Reporter 2: “Alright, so you’re in a car crash…” Reporter 1: “What’s next? When you come to your house for a fire you get a bill too?” According to CBS affiliate WFAN, the bill will charge all drivers in the accident regardless of fault. One driver says, it’s this part that makes the least sense. “Why should I be charged for something I didn’t cause? Send the bill to the guy who caused it. It
