15/10/09. A fire set between Nearra St, Deagon and the Gateway Motorway right by the Cabbage Tree Creek Bridge. From what I figure it wasn’t an accident, like a spark/ cigarette butt from a passing vehicle on the motorway as it was on the residential side of the very tall sound barrier. Witnesses told me that they saw some local school kids in the area not long before the alarm was raised.
The fire brigade units came from as far away as Chermside. You may see the Chermside firies aren’t without a sense of humour. Watch the end of the segment shutting off the hydrant. ![]()
The heat must have been intense as two firies looked stuffed by the time I got there. The temps were in the low 30′s and very dry.
I initially wasn’t going to check it out as I thought it was a house fire and I don’t feel it right to dwell on others misfortune. But when we figured it was a scrub fire, I went to get some of the drama fighting it on the ground but the chopper was far more interesting,so it turned into a chopper water bombing fest.
This big bushfire burnt about 1000 ha and was finally controled after 8 days of extreme firefighting by brave men of fazendas Diacuí, Barranco Alto, São João, Campo Novo, Centenário and Caiman.
