(Sept. 29)CNN — From baby deliveries to unexpected deaths, Mike Bowes, a 911 dispatcher from
Quincy, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston, has handled a wide range of emergency calls. But Monday night, the 44-year-old received an unexpected call from his neighbor. His own house was on fire. Out of 90,000 people who reside in Quincy, Mike Bowes’ was the home in flames, and he had answered the emergency call.

On 9-27-09 GFD toned out for a reported box alarm in a junkyard just after 2pm, the header was visible from Porter County Indiana. Multiple lines were used along with aerial ladders to extinguish the fire after Firefighters gained entry to the property. Crews were on scene into the next day pouring thousands of gallons of water on the 200×200 100 foot tall pile of crushed car parts. Investigators reported the fire was due to spontaneous combustion. Mutual aid companies From Merrillville, Lake Ridge, and Portage assisted with Gary Station Coverage.

This is one of approximately thirty short videos produced by the Aurora Regional Fire Museum for their exhibit “Getting There • Getting Water • Getting Rescued 150 years of the tools and technology used to
fight fires and save lives.”

The museums new exhibit, traces the evolution of the tools and technology used by firefighters. Visitors can pass a leather fire bucket from the early 1800s. See and hear how modern fire engines clear the streets with sirens, air horns, and devices that change traffic lights green. Watch vintage film clips of firefighters and fire engines on one of five video touch-screens. All this in addition to five pieces of fire apparatus on display in a fully restored 1894 fire station.

The ready availability of jobs in the growing federal government attracted many to Washington in the 1960s, and middle class African-American neighborhoods prospered. Despite the end of legally mandated racial segregation, the historic neighborhoods of Shaw, the H Street Northeast corridor, and Columbia Heights, centered at the intersection of 14th and U Streets Northwest, remained the centers of African-American commercial life in the city.

As word of King’s murder in Memphis, Tennessee spread on the evening of Thursday, April 4, crowds began to gather at 14th and U. Stokely Carmichael, the Trinidad and Tobago-born activist and Howard University graduate, had parted with King in 1966, and had been removed as head of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in 1967, but led members of the SNCC to stores in the neighborhood demanding that they close out of respect. Although polite at first, the crowd fell out of control and began breaking windows. By 11pm, widespread looting had begun, as well as in over 30 other cities. Read more here
