The day was Dec. 16, 1960, and two airplanes had collided in midair over Staten Island. One, a United Airlines DC-8 from Chicago heading to Idlewild (now Kennedy) International Airport, smashed into buildings in Sterling Place, just west of Seventh Avenue in Park Slope, Brooklyn … many thought a bombing occurred. Later that year, the USS Constellation — which was built by New York Naval Shipyard, Brooklyn, NY — a fire broke out in the last stages of her building. Fifty civilian workers died in the blaze.

***Some cursing on video*** While shooting some ENG/stock footage last night of a tank battery fire near Lamesa, TX that was ignited by lightning, an explosion took place that sent a foot and half long, 4″ diameter pipe valve from 200 yards away arcing directly into the front of my storm chase vehicle causing extensive damage. This is closer than you EVER want to be to an explosion! Firefighters from Lamesa and Andrews, TX fought to keep the fire down and the tanks cooled off for an hour before it finally exploded. Miraculously, all managed to escape without injury! It is outfitted with a 90mm high-velocity cannon, pintle-mounted 7.62mm machine gun, and titanium-ceramic armor-plating, and can carry a compliment of five troops: four passengers who can fire their weapons from emergency jump seats, and one passenger who operates the mounted machine gun, though usually the machine gun in used by the driver. Its main function is to provide anti-vehicular support. While the main cannon can only shoot one round every few seconds, the machine gun has unlimited ammunition and can fire even when the cannon is reloading.
