House Fire on Austin Street
This is a video of a house fire that I took on my street about 3AM 10/15/09. No one was injured but the house was a total loss. This is in real time and as you can see it doesn’t take long for the flames to completely engulf the two upper floors. This fire happened in Norwood, MA.

@dougydo109 well yo they r checking if anyone is in there first before they put it out b/c they can save them and if that water hits any one in there it will hurt or injure them and if the whole building just falls apart it will kill any one thats in there
i know were this is im mor near the cleveland school than the balch but i know right were that is
Good video. Even with just a digital camera there was plenty of light from the fire to make an awesome film.
Incredible footage, that house looked like something from a horror movie.
Heros!

a neighbor with a garden hose could have put water on that fire quicker.
Hi,
I do live on Austin street. Thanks for the compliment on the video. All the activity early that morning woke me and I went out and shot this video with my little point and shoot canon. I wasn’t sure how it would come out because it was so dark but it came out ok.
Hey Nice Video Great job i live in norwood do you? u live on austin st Near the Balch School Right?
I work with the guy who lived on the 2nd floor. No one was hurt, all was well considering. Just helped him move some new furniture today that was given 2 my man.
Looks like that ‘chief’ was completely overwhelmed by this fire. When he had the boys in the street start playing “The Runaway Rhapsody” on the air horns it appeared that only two firefighters came out. If there were only two guys operating inside, that would explain why they went from light to almost no smoke on the top floor and fire showing inside the attic window, to heavy fire in the attic, and eventually heavy fire on the top floor with virtually total roof involvement. A fire like this requires quick action by firefighters with a line on each floor and lots of hooks.
Maybe that community should look into hiring a fire chief with a firefighting background.
Were you inside the building???? You can’t compare one fire to another…..especially if you weren’t there. Easy does it hero!!
On the average, there are 100 people a day watching this guy “in action”. I hope that some of them are voters and taxpayers. They should be asking some questions.
I was always taught that “command” should be facing the other way and relying on his officers, rather than staring at it and micromanaging (which becomes “crisis” management) just watch and see. By the way… who ever taught him to set up command directly beneath power lines, especially with sticks up and working nearby. In the spirit of Bugs Bunny, what a maroon!
That makes sense. Having send that though, the men inside should’ve been able to knock it down WAY before it got to the point where it was shooting out the window then to the roof. There was a fire about 3 years ago near my old apartment building which was probably the size this one was at the beginning and our FD able to keep that from even getting anywhere near the point this one got.
I know exactly what you mean. That’s the first thing I said when I watched it. The only thing I can say is that they had to wait for the chief to sound the evacuate the building horn before they could put water on it from the exterior because they would drown their own men that were inside at the time however, I,m sure they could have been doing something. Most of the firefighters that were hanging around were mutual aid men from surrounding towns. All the men inside were from the Norwood FD.
Why isn’t anyone putting water on the flames through the window? It took 3:17 until the roof was starting to catch fire..In my mind plenty of time to do something
